Native trees are accustomed to the climate and will be more likely to thrive than non-native species. These native trees help to protect our ecosystem and provide a natural habitat for wildlife. Non-native species can disrupt the environment through cross-pollination and, in some cases, become invasive.

There are some great resources online that help you determine the native species for your area. Trees of Canada has an extensive list. You can also reach out to your local nursery or garden centre or speak with one of our arborists for detailed information.

When planting a tree in Canada, spring (April – June) and fall (September – October) are best. This will also depend on a number of factors including the species and soil type. Our team will ensure your tree is planted at the ideal time of year.

Many times, you already have an idea of where you would like to plant your tree and that will help you determine what kind of tree to plant. However, there are a few key points to keep in mind.

• Avoid overhead wires
• Ensure there is enough space that future root systems won’t disrupt pipes, fences, foundations, sidewalks and other trees
• Give them room to grow. Consider how large the tree will get and space them out accordingly

The first 2 – 3 years of life, it is crucial that the tree is sufficiently hydrated. The soil should be slightly damp. If there has not been a lot of rain, you should give your tree a good watering twice/week with a slow trickle with the hose for 15 – 20 minutes. If water is pooling or is extremely wet, you are probably overwatering and should water less frequently.
